What Is Shopify?

Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform that lets you build an online store, manage products, accept payments, and fulfill orders — all from one dashboard. Unlike WooCommerce, you don't need a separate hosting account or technical setup. Everything is managed for you: hosting, SSL, checkout, and payment processing.

It's the platform behind more than 2 million active stores worldwide, and it's the dominant choice for dropshipping for a reason: the app ecosystem is unmatched. DSers, CJDropshipping, Judge.me, TrackingMore, Klaviyo — every major dropshipping tool integrates with Shopify natively, often in a single click.

Why Shopify Is the Default Choice for Dropshipping

After 7 years, I've never seriously considered switching platforms. Here's why Shopify is still the right call for dropshipping in 2025:

📦

DSers & CJDropshipping Integration

Both apps install directly from the Shopify App Store. DSers handles AliExpress orders; CJDropshipping manages US-warehouse products. Both sync inventory and orders automatically.

Judge.me Reviews

Product reviews are the #1 conversion driver in ecommerce. Judge.me installs in one click and imports reviews automatically — which is exactly what I do on Essentials Houses.

📧

Klaviyo Email Sync

Once connected, Klaviyo pulls real-time cart, purchase, and browse data from Shopify. My abandoned cart flow and welcome series run fully on autopilot.

🎯

TikTok & Meta Pixel

Both integrations are native in the Shopify dashboard. No manual pixel code needed. Events fire correctly from day one — critical for running paid ads profitably.

💳

Shopify Payments

Accept cards without a third-party gateway and avoid the 0.5–2% transaction fee Shopify charges otherwise. Available in the US, making it a straightforward choice.

📱

Mobile-Optimized Storefronts

Every theme is responsive by default. Since most TikTok traffic lands on mobile, this matters more than people realize. No extra configuration needed.

Real Experience

When I rebuilt Essentials Houses — narrowing from 378 products down to 186 active SKUs across Kitchen Gadgets, Smart Home, and Home Organization — Shopify made the whole migration manageable. Bulk editing, collection SEO, and metafields all worked without third-party tools.

Shopify Pricing — What You'll Actually Pay

Shopify's advertised pricing is straightforward. What catches people off guard is the additional app costs that stack on top. Here's what the platform itself costs:

Plan Monthly Cost Transaction Fee* Best For
Basic $39/mo 2% (0% with Shopify Payments) New stores, just getting started
Shopify $105/mo 1% (0% with Shopify Payments) Growing stores, better reporting
Advanced $399/mo 0.5% (0% with Shopify Payments) High-volume stores needing advanced reports
⚠️ Honest Warning

Start on Basic ($39/mo) and use Shopify Payments to eliminate transaction fees. Your real monthly cost will be Basic + whatever apps you need. For a lean dropshipping setup — DSers free plan, Judge.me free plan, Klaviyo up to 500 contacts — you can run profitably for under $60/month total.

The App Stack I Actually Use

Shopify's real power is the App Store. Here's what I run on Essentials Houses and what each one costs:

Fulfillment

DSers (free) — Handles all AliExpress/China-shipped products. One-click order processing, bulk fulfillment, and automatic tracking updates.

CJDropshipping (free) — For US-warehouse products where I need faster shipping times. Integrates directly with Shopify orders.

Social Proof

Judge.me (free–$15/mo) — Imports and displays product reviews. The free plan covers everything a new store needs. I started on free and only upgraded to access custom review widgets.

Email Marketing

Klaviyo (free up to 500 contacts) — Connects to Shopify in one click and powers all my automation: Welcome Series, Abandoned Cart, Browse Abandonment, Post-Purchase, and Win-Back flows. This single integration recovers a meaningful percentage of otherwise lost revenue every month.

Tracking

TrackingMore — Reduces "where's my order?" support tickets by giving customers real-time shipment visibility. Critical for dropshipping stores with longer China shipping times.

What I Don't Like About Shopify

Transaction Fees Outside Shopify Payments

If you use a third-party payment gateway — PayPal, Stripe, or anything else — Shopify charges an additional 0.5–2% transaction fee on top of your gateway's own fees. The fix is simple: use Shopify Payments. But it's worth knowing this upfront.

App Costs Add Up

The base platform is affordable. But a realistic app stack — reviews, upsell, email, tracking — can add $50–120/month. Plan for it. My rule: don't add a paid app unless it generates at least 3x its cost in recovered revenue or time saved.

Blog and SEO Are Limited

Shopify's built-in blog works, but if content marketing is a major part of your strategy, it feels limited compared to WordPress. No plugin ecosystem, limited template flexibility, no native table of contents. Manageable, but worth noting.

The Fix

For SEO content on your store, use Shopify's blog for product-focused posts and a separate site (like this one) for broader content marketing. That separation also protects your store's load speed from heavy content pages.

Who Should — and Shouldn't — Use Shopify

✓ Great For

  • Dropshippers using AliExpress or US warehouses
  • Anyone running TikTok or Meta paid ads
  • Stores planning to use Klaviyo for email automation
  • Entrepreneurs who want a reliable, managed platform
  • Stores needing product reviews and social proof fast
  • Anyone serious about building a real online business

✗ Not Great For

  • Bloggers or content-first businesses (use WordPress)
  • Businesses needing complex B2B pricing or quotes
  • Anyone unwilling to pay for apps beyond the basics
  • High-volume merchants needing heavy custom development

Final Verdict

After 7 years of building and running stores on Shopify, my verdict is simple: it's the best platform for dropshipping and straightforward ecommerce, full stop. The app ecosystem is unmatched, the Shopify Payments integration eliminates unnecessary fees, and the platform simply works — reliably, consistently, and without the technical headaches of self-hosted alternatives.

The pricing stings a little as you add apps, and the SEO tools leave something to be desired if content is your main growth channel. But for a dropshipping store running TikTok traffic, converting with a good product page, and recovering carts with Klaviyo automation — Shopify is the right foundation.

My rating: 4.9 out of 5.
